FILIPE ALVES

Filipe Alves was born in Porto (Portugal) in 1989 and started to learn the trombone in his home town at the age of 11. He was a junior student in Lisbon (conservatoire, music school, academy and university) with Reinaldo Guerreiro, and studied with Prof. Stefan Schulz at the Berlin University of the Arts from 2011. He also attended various master classes with Christian Gössling, Jesper Busk Sorensen, Denis Wick, Andreas Klein and Enrique Crespo. From 2011 to 2012 he was an academic at the Berlin Philharmonic.

From 2011 to 2012, Filipe Alves was a trombonist at the Remix Ensemble in Porto. For the 2012/2013 season, he played as a solo trombonist at the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, where he was involved in numerous concerts, opera, and ballet performances. He also played with the NDR and WDR radio orchestras, as well as the Orquestra Gulbenkian, the Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and the European Union Youth Orchestra. He has worked with conductors such as Simone Young, Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. He also played concerts with German Brass, among others.

In 2008 he was a prizewinner of the Prémio Jovenes Músicos in Lisbon and the Terras de La Salette in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal. In 2014 he received the Eduard Söring Award from the foundation of patronage of the Hamburg State Opera. In April 2015, Filipe Alves successfully auditioned at the State Chapel, Berlin, for the position of solo trombonist and played Mahler's 3rd symphony under Zubin Mehta shortly afterwards.
